Human studies<br \/>\nindicate it may help prevent cancer.<br \/>\nOranges: One orange provides an impressive 50 g to 70<br \/>\ng of vitamin C, 40 mcg of folic acid, 52 mg of calcium, as<br \/>\nwell as beta carotene and Vitamins B1, B2, B3, and fiber.<br \/>\nTangerines provide similar benefits.<br \/>\nPapayas: Called \u201cthe fruit of the angels\u201d by Christopher<br \/>\nColumbus, who noticed that the natives (who ate them<br \/>\ndaily) were strong and had few health problems (if any).<br \/>\nThe nutrients in papaya promote heart health, boost<br \/>\nimmune systems, increase male fertility, aid digestion,<br \/>\nprevent emphysema, and protect against colon cancer.<br \/>\nPapaya contains the digestive enzyme, papain, which is<br \/>\nused like bromelain, a similar enzyme found in pineapple,<br \/>\nto treat sports injuries, wounds, other trauma, skin<br \/>\ndisorders, and allergies.<br \/>\nPeaches: Though low in calories (one cup of sliced<br \/>\npeaches has only 60 calories) and composed of 80%<br \/>\nwater, peaches are packed with fiber, vitamins, minerals,<br \/>\nand carotenoids. The dose of fiber in peaches acts as a<br \/>\ngentle laxative, aids digestion, and may also help combat<br \/>\ncancer. A study in China found that men and women who<br \/>\nate peaches more than two times per week had less risk of<br \/>\ndeveloping cancers of the mouth than those who did not<br \/>\neat peaches.<br \/>\nPears: Pears are high in fiber, particularly lignin, an<br \/>\ninsoluble fiber that helps to move cholesterol out of the<br \/>\nbody, and pectin, a soluble fiber which binds to cholesterol, also causing it to be removed from the body. The<br \/>\ninsoluble fiber also helps reduce the risk of colon cancer.<br \/>\nPears also contain a mineral, boron that play an important<br \/>\nrole in keeping bones strong.<br \/>\nPomegranates: Contains tons of phytochemicals like<br \/>\npotassium, which is great for lowering your blood<br \/>\npressure. Studies also suggest that pomegranates, which<br \/>\ncontain the most cancer-fighting ellagitannins out of any<br \/>\ncommon fruit, can inhibit cancer cell growth, slow the<br \/>\nprogression of prostate cancer and reduce the risk of<br \/>\natherosclerosis (See \u201cHeart Disease\u201d).<br \/>\nPrunes (Dried Plums): Because of their high fiber,<br \/>\nprunes are famous for their laxative effect. Prunes are<br \/>\nknown for normalizing blood sugar levels, protecting<br \/>\nagainst many ailments (heart disease, breast cancer, colon<br \/>\ncancer, etc.), and helping with weight loss.<br \/>\nRaspberries: High in fiber, as well as vitamin C, natural<br \/>\naspirin, ellagic acid and anthocyanins. They appear to have<br \/>\nanti-viral and anti-cancer properties, with studies suggesting they may have a role in preventing oral cancer.<br \/>\nSquash*: Very high in vitamin A. Also contains fiber,<br \/>\nvitamins C, B6, B1, potassium, folate, and other phytonutrients which may help prevent cancer, heart attack,<br \/>\nstroke, and high blood pressure. The copper found in<br \/>\nsummer squash is also helpful for reducing the painful<br \/>\nsymptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.<br \/>\nStrawberries: Contain high levels of ellagic acid and<br \/>\nanthocyanins, and are rich in vitamin C and fiber.<br \/>\nStrawberries also display anti-viral and anti-cancer activity,<br \/>\nparticularly against liver cancer. In one study, strawberries<br \/>\ntopped a list of eight foods most linked to lower rates of<br \/>\ncancer deaths among elderly people. Those eating the<br \/>\nmost strawberries were three times less likely to develop<br \/>\ncancer compared to those eating few or no strawberries.<br \/>\nStrawberries also protect against macular degeneration<br \/>\nand rheumatoid arthritis.<br \/>\nTomatoes*: A major source of lycopene, an antioxidant<br \/>\nand anti-cancer agent that intervenes in devastating chain<br \/>\nreactions of oxygen free radical molecules. Tomatoes are<br \/>\nlinked to lower rates of pancreatic cancer and cervical<br \/>\ncancer. Lycopene \u2013 even as found in ketchup \u2013 may also<br \/>\nlower the risk of cardiovascular disease. Organic ketchup<br \/>\n(which is darker) contains up to 60% more lycopene per<br \/>\ngram than regular brands.
